Thomson DCM476 - Are my cable modem stats good (pic)

This snapshot of my current diagnostic screen for Thomson DCM476 modem.

Are they in acceptable range or do you think i will need an amp (i am getting the Electroline EDA-FT08300 Active Return (8-port = 3dB forward, 0dB return loss)).

What are the ideal range of values for Forward and Return path (Power + SNR)? Is lower better for SNR for Return Path while higher is better for Forward Path?

And why do i only have 3 return path channels and not four. Has the entire industry moved away from 4? Cheap bastards

Change MAC address

DCM476 - DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem mac address

The cable providers allocate IP address using DHCP. It looks at the MAC address of the computer (or router) it is communicating with and goes from there.

Change MAC address::
I needed to get my IP changed so I called up my ISP and told them. It took them 10 minutes to reset it.

So,
1) Unplug your cable modem for about a minute
2) Direct connect your PC or laptop to the modem
3) Power On Cable Modem (on surfboard, wait for the "Online" light to come on constantly)
4) Wait another minute.
5) Repeat steps 1-3 for Router.

It might not be possible. It's assigned on your ISP's end. I've noticed the same thing with my SBC DSL modem though. I only get a new IP every month or so. My guess is that the IPs are assigned to the modem for long periods.

Factory reset not working on DCM476

[Cable] Factory reset not working on DCM476

1. Do a ipconfig /release in the command prompt on your PC before disconnecting it from the modem. This releases the DHCP lease.

2. Power off modem (as you don't want it to see your PC MAC again!)

3. Wait that 5-10 minutes.

4. Connect PC to router, connect modem to router. Power on modem.

If it still fails after step 4, clone the MAC address of the PC to the WAN interface of your router. Note: This doesn't cure the cause of the problem, only the symptom by making that router thinks that your router is the PC.

RCA / Thomson Modem Hack Discovered

RCA / Thomson Modem Hack Discovered

An anonymous reader writes "Those un-employed modem hackers are at it again. The group known as TCNiSO has released a very interesting hardware modification for RCA / Thomson cable modems. The modification is done by grounding the bus clock on the serial EEPROM which throws the device into a diagnostic panic mode. Then by using the debug tools from the embedded console to reprogram the EEPROM, a user can permanently enable a developers menu which gives complete control of the modem, such as modifying the hardware addresses or flashing new firmware. Now if only these guys can figure out how to enable the Bluetooth features on my v710 phone..."
